Report: Darren Oliver might return to Blue Jays – for more money

Darren Oliver might be willing to return to the Toronto Blue Jays, but only if they boost his salary. If they balk, he is ready to retire at age 42, according to a report from Foxsports.com.

The Blue Jays picked up Oliver’s US$3-million option after the veteran reliever logged a 2.06 ERA in 56 2/3 innings. His 2013 salary is well below market value.

“Oliver’s perspective is that the Jays already have demonstrated an ‘all-in’ approach by making their blockbuster with the Miami Marlins and another trade with the New York Mets for right-hander R.A. Dickey,” according to the Foxsports.com report written by Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi. “Why not extend a little more, particularly for a pitcher who has given the team a strong clubhouse presence in addition to elite performance?”

With a series of trades and free-agent signings, the Jays have pushed their payroll to US$120-million. General manager Alex Anthopoulos has said he does not foresee increasing that figure after adding starting pitchers Dickey, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle, shortstop Jose Reyes and outfielder Melky Cabrera.
