Winter Olympics 2014: Sochi torch unveiled

Winter Olympics

The 2014 Winter Olympics are set to begin in just over a year, and on Monday, the Sochi 2014 torch was unveiled by the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee.

Per the Olympic website, the torch is made of chrome, and has red detail, since red is Russia's traditional sport color.

Further tying in Russian culture, the torch is shaped like a feather, which refers to the Phoenix -- the legendary bird that is fixated in Russian mythology and folklore.

14,000 torches will be produced in advance of the 2014 Olympics, which are set to open on Feb. 7, 2014, and conclude on Feb. 23.

Sochi, Russia was selected as the host city to the 2014 Olympics, over Salzburg, Austria and Pyeongchang, South Korea. 2014 will mark the first time that the Russian Federation will have hosted the Olympics. In 1980, the Soviet Union hosted the Summer Games in Moscow.
